Despite the often caricatured image of Elvis with a guitar being one of the most enduring images within twentieth century culture and beyond Elvis was a far more accomplished on the piano than the guitar and self taught on both instruments. Elvis would often spend time at Graceland, or any other of his homes, singing with friends whilst accompanying himself on piano and many examples of these were recorded on private recordings and have now been released into the public domain. Apart from these there are a handful of studio recordings which feature Elvis on piano and two of those are amongst the finest vocal performances that Elvis ever produced. One of those, Danny Boy, was recorded during Elvis' final studio recordings at Graceland during "The Jungle Room Sessions" in 1976 and the other was nine years earlier on 11 September 1967 at RCA's Studio B in Nashville, "You'll Never Walk Alone". Elvis' recording of "You'll Never Walk Alone" is a vastly overlooked masterpiece but due to the nature of the construction of the final master and perhaps a victim of commercialisation, the released version could have been so much better as the master is a splice of takes eight and one. The first take at five and a half minutes long is one of those examples where Elvis began to sing got himself so immersed in the song and just couldn't let go! It seems that the running time was deemed two long and so only the second half of the song was used with the intro taken from take eight giving the song a more commercially acceptable running time of two minutes and forty four seconds. It is almost inconceivable that a take of such quality would receive similar treatment today but that first take would most likely be released in it's entirety. Although Elvis won three Grammy awards during his lifetime it is little known that he was also nominated for a further eleven including one in the Best Sacred Performance category in 1968 for the studio master of this very song. 'You'll Never Walk Alone' was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for their 1945 musical 'Carousel' and Elvis recorded his version on 11 September 1967. It was in fact the last of seven songs recorded that night at RCA's Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee. Despite it's Grammy nomination in the UK the version recorded by Gerry and the Pacemakers is the better known especially after it was adopted as an anthem by two of the world's biggest football clubs, Liverpool and Celtic. Despite being released as a single and achieving a Grammy nomination it would take over three years before it would make it onto an album of any sort. Although the title track of the album, the album was released on RCA's budget label - Camden and this seemed to be a corporate strategy in the early 70's as far as Elvis was concerned as several of his best known songs were released in a similar way. At the conclusion of this video is a live performance of the song by Elvis and he performed the song just once on stage, with himself at the piano and recorded during the evening show in the Nassau Veteran Coliseum, Uniondale, NY on 19 July 1975 . Listening to these performance with particular attention to Elvis' vocal it doesn't seem like eight years had passed between the live performance and the 1967 studio recordings!
