Gimli, Manitoba is the fascinating heart of "New Iceland", located less than an hour's drive north of Winnipeg, making it a perfect day trip from the capital. In this video, I explore this fascinating town on the shores of Lake Winnipeg, which boasts both a rich cultural heritage and some of Manitoba's finest lakeside beaches. This dynamic, multi-faceted slice of Iceland in Canada is truly a lesser-known destination just waiting to be discovered, and I was truly impressed with the mountain of attractions it has on offer, especially given its small size! In 1875, a group of 1200 Icelandic settlers made their way across the Atlantic to settle in the newly-established country of Canada, eyeing the lakefront location in Gimli as their permanent settlement. After negotiations with the Government of Canada, Manitoba's historic Icelandic reserves were created, guaranteeing the new settlers a degree of autonomy within the newly established province of Manitoba. Today, Gimli is the largest Icelandic community outside of Iceland, and its rich heritage lives on through its many festivals and local traditions. I begin my tour of this incredible town at Viking Park, home to their iconic Viking statue, and the New Iceland Heritage Museum, which offers a wealth of local history including several recreated homes (and even a Viking dress-up area for the kids!). After, I sample Gimli's signature Vinarterta, a traditional Icelandic dessert featuring layers of sugar cookies and prune spread, topped with a thin icing. From there, I visit the Gimli Glider Exhibit (one of the best small town museums I've ever visited!) featuring information about the 1983 emergency landing of an Air Canada jet which landed on a race track outside of town (you can even try your hand at landing the plane on their flight simulator!). Other highlights of my day included a tour of the 1899 H.P. Tergesen's General Store, and a walk along the mural-lined sea wall. I ended my tour at the excellent Interlake Brewing Company to sample some of Manitoba's best brews (all made with local ingredients, such as wild rice) and finished off my day with listening to the many buskers perform outside of Busker's Ice Cream. Even if small towns aren't generally of interest to you, I guarantee you that you'll be impressed with Gimli and the wealth it has to offer to its visitors. It would be impossible to NOT have a good time here! Do you have any questions about travel to Gimli, or have you been to Gimli and have any suggestions of places I might have missed? I'd love to hear from you in the comments below.
