At hospital after a Laryngectomy surgery. How did you react to seeing your stoma for the first time? https://laryngectomy.info/ #laryngectomy #totallaryngectomy #cancer #laryngeal #larynx #voice FULL TRANSCRIPT: How was it when you sort of saw your stoma for the first time and the stitches around the stoma how did you feel? You know, I knew it was happening because obviously I met with the surgeon before surgery, I met with all the nurses and the clinical nurse specialists, I met with the speech therapist and they all showed me pictures and obviously I went out and tried to find pictures online and and so to try and prepare myself for when the moment came when I did wake up and I was breathing through a stoma in my neck, so I think because I did all that pre-prep it was okay. What I couldn't get used to was the amount of saliva, you know because obviously i'm not filtering through my mouth and nose, coming straight from my lungs out and yeah I couldn't believe, and I was like now my my only concern I remember was will it be always like this. Obviously I can safely say no it will not always be like that, I use one tissue a day like any other normal person you know, so my biggest concern was the amount of mucus phlegm I was bringing up, no pain or discoloration or what it looked, because I prepared myself for it. Did you use a mirror when you were cleaning away the mucus from your stoma, are you able to? Yeah absolutely I mean the nurses on the wall were really good because I think, they don't want you to stay in the ward forever they want you to go because the beds are always in need of someone else so you know so they were very good at teaching me how to self-care for my stoma very quickly.
