Of all Taiwan’s major cities, the first to be developed was Tainan. It was also Taiwan’s first international trading port. In 1624, in the midst of the Age of Exploration, the Dutch were expanding trade in East Asia. They built Fort Zeelandia at Tayouan, a.k.a. modern-day Anping District, Tainan. They also built Chihkan Tower and encouraged Chinese settlers to develop the area around it. In 1662, Zheng Chenggong attacked Tainan and his army drove out the Dutch. They established the first Chinese regime there. In 1684, Taiwan was subsumed into the Qing dynasty. The highest authority of Taiwan Prefecture made its headquarters in Tainan.
