Joe Galloway was born in Bryan, Texas, on November 13, 1941. His father fought in the U.S. Army during World War II and when he returned from service the family relocated to Refugio, Texas. Galloway initially enrolled in community college in 1959, but dropped out after six weeks to join the Army, however his mother convinced him to go into journalism, and he subsequently majored in the subject at Victoria College. Galloway took a job as a reporter for United Press International (UPI) and was eventually sent to Vietnam in 1965. Wanting to be where the action was Galloway time and again put his life at risk to be on the front lines of combat. In November of 1965 Galloway embedded with the 1st Cavalry Division and participated in the first large scale battle against the North Vietnamese. Galloway would witness countless acts of heroism during the battle, including from himself. Thirty-three years after the battle, Galloway was decorated with the Bronze Star for helping to rescue a badly wounded soldier during the fight. Years after the war, along with Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore, Galloway co-wrote a detailed account of the Battle of Ia Drang in the 1992 best-selling book, "We Were Soldiers Once… and Young". The book was adapted into the 2002 film "We Were Soldiers" starring Mel Gibson as Moore and Barry Pepper as Galloway. Joseph L.
