SONG TITLE: Daughters of Jerusalem REFERENCE: 1984 NIV Bible (Luke 23:28-31) COMPOSER: Lionel De Leon GENRE: rock ballad ALBUM: Prisoners of Hope (1997) TRACK: eight MUSICIANS: Lionel De Leon vocals, acoustic guitar; Tom Alderman backing vocals, piano; Skip Hahn backing vocals, pedal steel, lead guitar; Fletcher Perkins backing vocals, bass; Raymond Genovese drums NOTES: This was the first Messenger Project recording to feature Skip Hahn on lead guitar and he played a perfectly haunting melody to set the mood. Tom Alderman's unique harmony also added a nice texture to the song. “Daughters of Jerusalem” was the fourth Bible song I composed in my quest to write 12 songs (one for each disciple). It was written on July 29th, 1996, after I was recuperating from a surgery on my left hand for trigger finger. My hand was in pain despite being anesthetized for the operation, and I couldn't help but relate to how much more Jesus suffered on the cross when he had spikes driven through his hands and feet. I was also sobered by Jesus's question, “for if men do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?” His question reminded me of how far we have drifted from our moral beginnings as a Christian nation, showing exactly what can happen “when the tree is dry.” Robert Powell ("Jesus of Nazareth") was the AI generated Jesus.
