(18 Sep 2017) FASHION HITS AND MISSES AT THE EMMY AWARDS The stars turned out in their Hollywood best on the red carpet of the 69th prime-time Emmy ceremony in Los Angeles Sunday (17SEPT2017). Trendy colors this year included silver and nude according to Connie Wang of Refinery29. "One of the biggest trends on the red carpet last night at the Emmys was silver sparkle. Silver sparkle is a really easy way to make a dramatic impact with kind of a streamline silhouette but some people took it really far to the extreme where they wore a really interesting shape but also had a crazy silver sparkle and that's a really high fashion look," said Wang who singled out Tracee Ellis Ross's look. "So I think Tracee Ellis Ross wore something that is not conventionally worn on the red carpet. It was structured and not body-con and it had a lot going on. And I think historically that would've gotten her put on the worst dressed list - it kind of obscured her body. I saw on Twitter a lot of people were saying that she looked big because she was wearing it which is funny because people don't wear dresses in order to look skinny, like that shouldn't be the only reason that you wear a gown, or decide on a gown, but the dress did make her look like a superhero, you know she looked like the movie star that she is - a forward thinking, progressive, open-minded person and that's what the Chanel haute couture dress really communicated and when she moved the feathers moved and the sequins shone and it was a dress made for action and a dress not made for just standing there and that's the kind of person she is. I thought it was a beautiful metaphor for who she is as an actress and what she believes," commented Wang, a senior features writer for Refinery29, an online lifestyle portal. Wang also commended Evan Rachel Wood for her choice to wear a pantsuit rather than a dress and while she gave Reese Witherspoon points for going with a short hemlined dress instead of the typical long gown, she said the Stella McCartney dress was more a miss than a hit. "So, Reese Witherspoon wore a Stella McCartney blazer-dress and it was short but in a petite person like her it can look really great but I do think there's something strange about the fit because most of the time samples, especially that celebrities borrow for the red carpet are tailored for someone who is very, very tall so the dress I think was re-worked for her but you could tell. Something about the fit wasn't quite right which in my personal opinion didn't make the look as strong as it could've been, but she did, she went on a limb and she wore something short which is commendable in my book." "Modern Family" star Sarah Hyland also suffered a bit of a miss with her Zac Posen gown. Her undergarments were showing. "Celebrities don't just put on a dress and head out the door. There's a lot of work involved in getting a celebrity red carpet-ready and often times Spanx are involved," explained Wang, adding "The trick with Spanx is to make sure that nothing is showing through, so any seams or lines or the actual Spanx now that those naked type dresses or dresses with a lot of cutouts are so popular and I guess Sarah Hyland's dress, the Spanx were peeking out of it which is something that you know we probably experience in day-to-day life but VPL (visible panty line) is still not considered to be a great look for the carpet."
