FLIPPING AROUND THE FM DIAL IN DETROIT: DECEMBER 11, 2025 I was reminded recently that Detroit used to be market #5 back in the day. Great jocks wanted to come and be a part of the Motor City. Even singers, groups, and bands wanted to come and record with MoTown. Sadly, due to economic issues, Detroit had fallen on hard times. As of the recording of this aircheck, it's market #14, according to the Neilsen ratings. The good news is, Detroit is becoming a great example of a city making a comeback. So let's check out just a few radio stations, and see how they are doing, as we give them 45 minutes to shine, to sound live and local. Loaded with injury accident lawyers. 89X (CIMX): I had a request from ‪@tgc99‬ to make sure I checked out this alternative station. "This is the return of Windsor's loudest export". They are heard in Detroit, but they are proudly Windsor in Canada. Broadcasting from across the river, they have a great variety of X Blocks that doesn't shy away from the hits from the likes of Billie Elish. Their website says Dan McDonald was on the air, but we never hear from him. 100.3 WNIC: We catch Theresa Lucas on this AC radio station playing all-Christmas getting ready for the Lions game on Sunday. Plus, we get bits of phone calls. 94.7 WCSX: One thing I've found is that Detroit city isn't just the home of MoTown Recods, there are a lot of rock in Detroit. The city is home of Jack White, Ted Nugent, Bob Seger, Grand Funk Railtoad, Iggy Pop, and, although I think of Alice Cooper as a Phoewnix guy, he did spend a good time in Detroit. Here we have Donielle Flynn doing middays on classic rock WCSX. ALT 98.7 (WDZH): It's "Detroit's New Alternative Rock" radio station. Yes, they are what we may expect from a alternative that we heard in other cities, but Ian Camfield's style of delivery sets it apart. He'll call it as he sees it. lol. CHANNEL 95.5 (WKQI): Just getting back on the top 40 radio station, after a day off to recover from the Jingle Ball, The Joe Show is on in the afternoons. Here's a question for radio folks. After an event like Jingle Ball that is sponsored is over and done with...do you still keep saying the sponsor(s)? 104.3 WOMC: It's Detroit's grestest hits with Beau Daniels doing the drive time shift, playing the classic hits and telling 'dad jokes' aka 'Beau jokes'. 106.7 WLLZ: "Detroit Wheels" was a legendary rock station in Detroit at 98.7 on the FM dial. Which lasted until, maybe 1995(?). With a lot of rock stations in Detroit, it's gotta be hard to compete. But in 2019, after soooooo many format changes on 106.7 FM. Alternative, country, adult hits, classic rock, country again, classic hits, classic rock again, rhythmic, oldies, (am I leaving anything out), they decided to bring back the calls of WLLZ and the name, Detroit Wheels". Rob Brandt is the drive home host. Plus we get a timely "6-7" promo from the morning show. 96.3 WDVD: With Today's Best Music", it's the Hot AC radio station in the Motor City with some old school radio vibes from Dave Fuller in the afternoons. I've heard his show before and love that he's not doing a bunch of liners, keeping it a local as possible. 101 WRIF: Gotta love the unusual radio names like Meltdown on the Detroit rock station. Hey. It's radio. Be different. Meltdown talks about metal rock is making a comeback. New and old. 97.9 WJLB: Chris Carsyn is playing "the D's Hip Hop & R&B" with apparently Big Dog Blast in the throwback Thursday, Free Ride at Five for the drive home. Or is it Big Dog on the radio? 99.5 WYCD: 4pm We catch the over time last break of Robb & Holly closing out day one of the Country Cares for St. Jude radiothon, and head into Coop's show at night. He kicks off his show with the 7 biggest country songs of the day on 'YCD. BTW: Many of these airchecks cannot be monetized due to the music copyrights.
