I give a lot of time, observing the effects of light on the subject and also in creating these qualities through watercolor In today's project we will use the scene of the Pont Neuf in Paris as a reference. The photo we have is rather dull in terms of light. The shapes attract me more that anything else. We can manipulate this light with a creative use of washes and create a variation. To evoke a calm early morning light is the intention here The soft transitions in our washes produce the effect of diffuse light coming through an atmosphere. This is the effect we want for creating morning light. The simple palette of a dominant blue with weak yellows glowing behind seems a recipe for morning light. Challenges Beside creating graded washes effectively the biggest challenge I found was in keeping the washes close together tonally. Slight gradual changes require more control, in the end the effect is satisfying. A second challenge was in determining the areas or shapes to be created using the washes. These we practiced in our drill. Compartmentalizing like this makes the painting easier technically. A third challenge is the amount of detail. The camera does not edit this but we can edit and express the details with some interesting brushwork . Some of the great painters of light scrolls, Monet, Turner, understood how to manipulate the tonal structure to go beyond what was observable to give a greater feeling of light and atmosphere. They also made it a point to get out and observe nature at specific times of day and specific weather conditions. This is at the heart of what we are doing today .
