Think you need more machines and more floor space to grow your cabinet business? Think again! We visited Woodland Horizon to see how they're out-producing the competition with one storage retrieval system and two CNC routers... Jeff Onsrud and the Onsrud team recently had the opportunity to visit Woodland Horizon (a custom kitchen and bath cabinetry shop) and talk with the company’s president Laverne Martin. By seamlessly integrating automated material-handling systems into their production, Woodland Horizon has significantly increased the volume of cabinets they produce to meet their customers’ demands — with a single CNC machine. Here’s how: Using Barbaric’s Panel Storage and Retrieval System (SRS) and an industrial CNC G-Series router they keep their production continuously flowing. 1) Barbaric’s SRS manages rainbow stacks of panels, continuously sorting and delivering them to the CNC machine. So, the CNC machine is never idly waiting for the next panel to be delivered. 2) A prelabeler applies a unique identifier, containing information such as barcodes, part numbers, and other information for use in downstream operations. This ensures 100% accuracy, streamlines assembly, and saves time. 3) The labeled, raw panels glide into the machine’s work envelope. 4) This is where the G-Series shines. With fast feeds, speeds, and tool changes, it quickly carves patterns into the wood, drills holes (using a drill block to produce several holes simultaneously), and cuts out nested parts (where parts are arranged in a tight pattern to maximize material yield) — all in a single setup. 5) The finished parts are unloaded while a sweeper simultaneously clears away any additional dust and debris and while the G-Series is already processing another panel. 6) The finished parts are placed in an area for final assembly. As you can see in the video, the vertical stacks are managed from overhead to accommodate tight and limited spaces. It’s also not all or nothing. You can get as much or as little automation as you need and can add systems as your business grows.
