This is the fifth video of a series on the Z6 III in use. This time “low light photography”. There are two typical, but quite different scenarios when the camera sensor gathers only few photons. In relatively bright sunlight at high shutter speeds (birds in flight etc. in particular with the 6.3 lenses and covnerter) and at sunset / sunrise in the golden/blue hours, when many animals become active. Since the color spectrum shifts a camera does not need to be good in both conditions. We are testing the Z6 III in both scenarios for video and photo extensively covering bird in flight catching fish and feeding their chicks. In low light we look at birds and muskrats swimming over the water and see how well the Z6 III is doing. What is in the video: Join us on a short trip to a sea bird location - testing the Z6 III in "low light" from birds in action to about 1 hour after sunset - the blue hour. Combination: Z6 III, Z 180-600 @ 840 F/9. Intro: 00:00 Birds in Action: 00:32 Golden Hour: 03:45 Sunset and Blue Hour: 06:42 Summary: 08:14 Birds in Action: We arrive on the site about 2 hours before sunset - many birds are still chasing food. One interesting observation: Sea gulls have two different techniques to catch fish - sky diving and skimming through the water. Overall I enjoyed the great AF at 20 FPS with the electronic shutter - the only mode I am using up to now. This allows you to capture great moments like the barn swallows feeding their chicks in flight without touch the ground and no denoising at ISO 5000 ! This is shot with the 180-600 plus Tc mostly at 840 mm at F/9 and no complaints on AF speed! Not all chicks have to wait for their parents some get transported around as you can see from the Great Crested Grebe - but it can be a bumpy ride ! All video handheld at 840 mm ! Chicks are trying to get back on the boat – their parent. Deliveries are on demand for the chicks of the Great Crested Grebe ! Let us try after the feather (to play with ??) a fish ! Overall the the Z6 III in combination with the Z-180-600 plus Tc works great for photo and video even as the light vanishes - 1h to sunset! All videos in Nraw either SDR Flat oder Nlog ! Golden Hour: So let us compare Nraw in SDR Flat and Nlog. Both color graded. In low light you want to shoot at 30 FPS with roughly 1/60 shutter speed. SDR starts at ISO 100 and Nlog at ISO 800 as native base ISOs. The dual gain sensor has a high gain point at ISO 800 and ISO 6400, respectively. For video I always use these two ISOs nothing else ! Clearly Nlog results in the more detailed color transitions and richer colors. Video or animal autofocus works very fine and delivers good ISO performance! Shadow recovery works nicely. This muskrat just barely looks over the water – yet the animal AF has no problem tracking the subject in the dim light over an extended range ! Muskrats become active upon sunset to look for food. The 6 K Nraw Nlog footage has great colors and the option to crop i.e. smoothly zoom into the footage. Typical for muskrats is the underwater entrance to their living quarters ! Sunset and Blue Hour: After sunset I use ISO 6400 Nraw Nlog at 1/60 or SDR flat at ISO 800. In bright light I use base ISO. Let us do another comparison at high ISO ! Again Nlog gives more differentiated colors ! For birds that are not flying too fast even birds in flight pictures are possible! Even after sunset clean video footage can be obtained from both Nraw SDR and Nraw Nlog ! Eventually I was switching to the 300 F/2.8 with the Tc - F/4 instead of F/9. Summary: Excellent low light performance in video and photo. Very good low light autofocus for video and photo. For Nraw in Nlog you have to work with the two native ISO (800 & 6400). Do not use anything else ! Alternatively use Nraw SDR - use the flat profile ! No weird things can be observed in noise or flickering in my copy of the Z6 III. Well suited for wildlife in low light !
