Hospitals are routinely scheduling complex surgeries without enough trained staff to safely support them. Today, it happened to me—and I know it’s happening to others, too. I showed up to do three breast reconstruction surgeries. But the hospital told me they didn’t have enough staff for the last case. They asked me to work faster, stretch the team thinner, and “make it work.” That’s not how we do safe surgery. So I called my patient and told her the truth. We agreed—we’re not doing this case that way. This isn’t a one-time thing. It’s happening again and again. We’re being asked to do more, with less, in less time. Patients deserve better—and so do the people taking care of them.
