St Sunday Crag via Glenridding and Patterdale Distance: ~11.86 miles (19.08 km) Ascent: ~750 m (2,754 ft) Time: 7~9 hours Difficulty: Moderate to challenging Start/Finish: Glenridding or Patterdale, Ullswater Rising proudly above the southern end of Ullswater, St Sunday Crag (841 m) offers one of the finest ridge walks in the eastern Lake District, with sweeping views over Helvellyn, Fairfield, and Deepdale. The route begins in Glenridding, climbing gently through farmland and open fellside with views back toward Ullswater’s silver ribbon. You soon join a well-defined path skirting Grisedale Beck, which leads you toward the valley’s quiet heart. As the valley narrows, the imposing flank of St Sunday Crag looms ahead, its grassy slopes giving little away about the superb panorama from the top. From Patterdale, an alternative start joins the same approach, ascending through Birks, a fine subsidiary peak that provides an excellent warm-up and early vantage point. The climb to St Sunday Crag’s summit ridge is steady but rewarding—broad grassy slopes open out into a spacious crest where the views expand dramatically. On a clear day, you can trace the Helvellyn ridge from Catstycam to Dollywaggon Pike, while behind you lie Place Fell, Brothers Water, and the far reaches of Kirkstone Pass. Descend via the Birks ridge or loop back down through Grisedale Valley for a gentler finish beside the beck. Both options lead back to the welcoming villages of Patterdale or Glenridding, where a pint or a slice of cake awaits. This route captures everything that makes Lakeland walking special: graceful valleys, airy ridges, and views that stay with you long after you’ve left the fell.
