During the past two years, Lowy has had the privilege and the pleasure of resurrecting an extraordinary work of art from the last century, a remarkable experience that ignited our passion, confirmed our expertise, and supported our long-held belief that beauty, history, and tradition have a rightful place in today’s art world. The Whitney Studio Mural, painted by artist Howard Gardiner Cushing, had been sleeping, so to speak, in Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney’s Long Island studio since the death of the visionary art patron and sculptor in 1942. Decades later, when the mural was offered for sale, Cushing’s granddaughter, Alexandra Cushing Howard, felt it might be made into panels that could be the centerpiece of a museum exhibition.
