How To Properly Flip A Career Call To A Sales Call In our Headhunter And Executive Recruiter Community Facebook group, we recently had Sandra, one of our favorite members ask: "I am very curious how to hold a Career Conversation with a Hiring Manager in an effort to get them to retain you to do a search. All Examples welcome!!" Well Sandra, this one's for you! I think this is a very important topic to cover, because one are the easiest ways to gain traction in a new market, or if you're a recruiter who's struggling to break out of a slump, is to book career calls with high-level decision-makers. The idea is to talk to the decision maker about their career, and about how you can help them get to their next level (whatever that may be for them) and then find a way to also talk about their hiring needs. On the surface it sounds reasonable... You're offering something of value (help with the decision-maker's career) in return for some of their attention so you can then pitch your services. However, the way most trainers have taught how to flip these calls is so clunky, it ends up being ineffective at best, and unethical at worst. The last thing you want to do is come off as a bait-and-switch recruiter. I want to show you the right way to do it. It's a little bit harder, and it's certainly more nuanced, but it is the perfect way to provide a huge amount of value to the decision-maker you're talking to, legitimately be able to help them with their career, and put you in the best possible light by linking the one thing they care about the most about (their career) with the value you can provide in recruiting top-talent for them.
