Presenter, Dr. Annette Kuhlmann. Presenter, Dr. Edina Haslauer. Summary: This discussion will provide an understanding of mass incarceration and its effects on communities of color. We will look at the history of mass incarceration since Emancipation, systemic racism in the creation of the school-to-prison pipeline, as well as the impact mass incarceration has on families. Overview of the WTF Is Going On? Race and the Criminal Justice System Series: The recent George Floyd killing has brought the issue of racial injustice within our society to the fore. This series will open up a space for the UW-Platteville community to learn about historical, structural, and systemic issues related to race and the criminal justice system. Series contributors include scholars, experts, and field practitioners, each offering deep insights into the issue and providing suggestions about what we as a society and as individuals can do to effect change. The series fits within UW-Platteville’s long tradition of developing innovative “beyond-the-classroom” opportunities for student learning and helping the wider community to better understand such significant moments of social change. The series also fits within the broader democratic tradition of working towards a more just and egalitarian society for all.
