Dealing with graphic images can be part of a journalist's job. Some may spend hours scrolling through feeds seeking visual documentation of violence and disasters, while others shoot or edit news photos and videos for publication. In many cases, working with disturbing imagery means repeatedly viewing or listening to this kind of content. Katarina Subasic is an editor at AFP’s European fact check team who has been interested in the mental health of journalists, vicarious trauma and in particular trauma and journalism. She wrote a chapter on journalists as witnesses of trauma for a major Serbian book on trauma in 2019 and she has translated "The Body Keeps the Score", Bessel van der Kolk’s book about trauma, into Serbian. Since 2022 she’s held online training and workshops for AFP journalists on handling graphic images and taking care of mental health. In this two-part video, Katarina shares tips for protecting your mental health while doing the important work of handling sensitive content. MUSIC: AUDIO NETWORK / Vitamin C / Dario Darnell
