With Ash Wednesday, the Church begins the Season of Lent, a time of prayer, conversion, and charity that leads us toward the celebration of the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In this message, Bishop Paolo Martinelli, Apostolic Vicar of Southern Arabia, invites the faithful to rediscover Lent as a favorable time to reflect on our Christian life, to deepen our relationship with Christ through prayer, fasting, and reconciliation, and to show concrete care for those in need. "Lent is a time of conversion—a call to change our hearts, to leave behind the paths that lead to death and return to the way of life, the way of the Gospel." Drawing inspiration from Saint Francis of Assisi, in the year marking the eight hundredth anniversary of his passing to heaven, the Bishop encourages all to embrace conversion of heart, to receive God’s forgiveness, and to become instruments of peace and mercy in families, communities, and society. "During this Lenten season, I invite you to learn from Saint Francis the conversion of heart and the way of forgiveness and mercy. This is the path before us this Lent: to receive God’s forgiveness—especially through the sacrament of reconciliation—and to extend forgiveness to others." May Mary, Mother of Hope and Mercy, accompany us on our Lenten journey, so that we may reach Easter renewed in faith, hope, and love.
