In this video, I take you with me to Japan as I begin the process of purchasing koi for my clients. This is Episode 1, Arriving in Japan, where the journey starts and the real work begins. Japan is the birthplace of Nishikigoi and remains the destination where koi dealers and hobbyists from around the world come to find the highest quality koi available. In this episode, I visit some of the most respected koi farms in Japan, including Torazo Koi Farm, Marusei Koi Farm, and Sekiguchi Koi Farm. At Torazo Koi Farm, I spend time selecting koi for my clients by carefully evaluating body structure, skin quality, balance, and long term potential. As a specialty farm, Torazo consistently produces koi with strong futures, and it was exciting to see both their current harvest and the direction the farm is heading. I also visit Marusei Koi Farm, a well known operation that works with a wide variety of koi types. Marusei is a gathering place for dealers from around the world, and it is always interesting to see what is available and how koi are being selected for clients globally. At Sekiguchi Koi Farm, I explore additional koi offerings and take part in the auction process, hoping to secure something special. Each farm visit presents new opportunities, and every selection is made with careful consideration for the future of each fish. At Tri Star Koi, my goal is to source koi directly from Japan by building strong relationships with breeders and selecting fish based on long term potential, not just how they look today. Every koi is chosen with intention, honesty, and the future in mind.
