Ukraine; Dnipro city; Holy Annunciation Church | UA: м. Дніпро; Свято Благовіщенський Храм The Holy Annunciation Church in Dnipro is one of the most prominent old Orthodox shrines in the city. Built in 1896, until 1920, the church was known as the Alexander Nevsky Church. The church stood on the site of a chapel on what was then Tsyganska Square and became an important part of pre-revolutionary Yekaterinoslav. Architecturally, it is one of the most striking examples of the neo-Russian style in Dnipro. Diocesan and local history publications most often associate the design with Mykola Sultanov, although the question of authorship remains unresolved: some believe that local architect Leonid Brodnitsky may have been involved in the design and implementation on site. The church experienced a difficult period in the 20th century. Services ceased in the 1930s, the building was misused, and the bell tower and main dome were later destroyed, while the turmoil of war inflicted further damage. Services resumed in 1943, after which a gradual restoration began, continuing into the post-war decades. The church currently holds the status of Local Architectural Monument No. 119. Diocesan publications note that in recent years, efforts have been made to restore it to its more complete historical appearance: restoration work has been carried out, the murals and iconostases have been updated, and the bell tower has been rebuilt.
