Third, the system’s design remains somewhat heavy, requiring SpaceX to discard it mid-flight to improve the Booster’s maneuverability. But since full reusability is the ultimate goal, ejecting a component during flight is counterintuitive. Lastly, when considering larger rocket variants like Starship Version 2 or Version 3, hot staging has encountered new challenges—such as those seen in the recent Starship Flight 8 launch.
