Drum nerds!! Time for “Today’s tip”. Here’s another idea for you to consider exploring with your eKit: think of all your eCymbals as not just a Ride OR as a Crash --- think of them all as a Ride AND a Crash! You can ride on the bow/head for articulation and then use the edge for crashes. When I play on an acoustic kit, my choices are usually 20”, 21” or 22” cymbals. Doesn’t matter if my kit has 1, 2 or 3 cymbals, I always ride and crash on all of them, same as many of you do on acoustic kits. But I see many eKit players with a bunch (TON!) of crash and rides. Not knocking it (been there, done that!), but if you’re on a budget, or have a small space, or simply want to simplify your set-up, using your cymbals as Crash/Rides is a great alternative. Consider the fact that any ePad can be any sound you want, and most pads have 2- or 3-zones. Plus, many newer modules allow a pad to have a sub-voice, and when you consider the head (bow), rim (edge), main sound and sub-sound, the sound options become only limited by your imagination. When you use sub-layers, you can get really cool results by assigning different cymbals, sizes and weights to the sub Head & Rim. To start, select instrument/assign, hit the ‘H/R’ button, make your individual adjustments, and when done, be sure to turn the ‘H/R’ button back on. When setting up your cymbals, experiment with cymbal sizes, combinations, different weights, and spend time with transient, EQ, and ambience. I typically choose ‘mix’ for my subs, but you can choose to have them switch/change sound depending on your strike velocity. Another tip: if you are playing heavier music or simply don’t need stick/tip articulation, try changing the head (bow) of the cymbal to an edge/rim sound, and make the edge of the same cymbal something larger in size. Example: assign a 20” Dark Crash to the H (head) of the cymbals, and assign the same Dark Crash sample to the edge (Rim), but change the size of the rim/edge to 24”. Do the same with your mix/volume! Hope this info helps you on your eKit journey. PS – the example of playing this cymbal set in a tune is ‘My Hope Is You’ by Third Day.
