UK Residents to Protect Community

On the fourth night of rioting, August 9, thousands of additional police were deployed in England's streets capital London. Many residents came together to protect their communities from further violence and damages. Around 200 residents in south-east London, Eltham, came together to "protect and honor" their neighborhood from attackers who plan to riot in high street. The regional organizer of the far-right English Defence League (EDL), said that the majority of people on the streets of Eltham were "patriots," and not vigilantes. "The police are unable to control the streets. Today these are local people, not EDL, these are patriots who have come out to defend their area. So the EDL has come down, about 50 of us, to manage them and control them and to sort of guide them to make sure they don't move out of order." said Jack England of South East Regional Organizer EDL. Youths in hooded tops clashed with police in Birmingham, smashing windows and raiding shops. Cars were blazed and bricks were thrown towards police.
