This time, I walked from Kanda to Nihonbashi—about 1 hour covering the route between these two central Tokyo business districts. KANDA: BUSINESS DISTRICT Kanda Station sits in one of Tokyo's older business districts. The area around the station has lots of small restaurants and izakaya (Japanese pubs) serving office workers. During lunch hours and after work the streets fill up with people grabbing food or drinks. The backstreets near Kanda have that older Tokyo business district feel—mid-rise buildings from decades ago, narrow streets, lots of small establishments packed together. Not fancy, just functional commercial space that's been here for a long time. WALKING TO NIHONBASHI The walk from Kanda to Nihonbashi takes about 30-40 minutes. The route probably follows major streets connecting these two areas—both are business districts but with different character. As you get closer to Nihonbashi, the buildings get bigger and the streets wider. You're moving from Kanda's smaller-scale business area to Nihonbashi's larger department stores and office towers. NIHONBASHI: HISTORIC COMMERCIAL CENTER Nihonbashi is Tokyo's original commercial center from the Edo period. Nihonbashi Bridge sits here—the historical point from which distances were measured in old Japan. Today there's a highway running overhead (built for the 1964 Olympics), so the bridge isn't as scenic as it used to be, but the location still matters as a reference point. The area around Nihonbashi has old department stores—Mitsukoshi and Takashimaya both have their flagship stores here. These are serious department stores, not trendy shopping like you'd find in Shibuya. More traditional, more expensive, serving customers who've been shopping here for decades. The streets in Nihonbashi are wider than Kanda. The buildings are bigger. It feels more established, more corporate, less like the scrappy business district energy that Kanda has. WHY WALK KANDA TO NIHONBASHI Both areas are central Tokyo business districts, but Kanda feels older and smaller-scale while Nihonbashi feels more prestigious and historic. Walking between them shows you that difference—you can see how Tokyo's commercial areas vary even when they're close to each other. The walk is only about an hour, so it's a quick route if you're exploring central Tokyo and want to see these two areas without taking the train between them. 🕒 TIMESTAMPS 00:00:00 — Kanda Station 00:15:00 — Kanda business streets 00:30:00 — Walking toward Nihonbashi 00:45:00 — Nihonbashi district 01:03:00 — Nihonbashi Bridge 🔔 Subscribe for more walks across Tokyo 👍 Like if walking from Kanda's smaller business streets to Nihonbashi's historic department stores showed you the difference
