At the proposal of the DCM, Prof. Natali Helberger from the University of Amsterdam has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Fribourg on 15 November 2024. The day before, she gave a public lecture on the topic of ‘AI in Media: Risk-Based Approaches and the Future of Democracy’. Prof. Natali Helberger is a leading international scholar at the intersection of media, technology, law and democracy. Her research has significantly shaped the understanding of platforms, algorithmic systems and AI, as well as their ethical implications and impact on democratic societies, media diversity and public discourse. In her lecture, Prof. Helberger highlights how debates about AI in Europe are often conducted from a risk perspective, especially regarding the impact on fundamental rights and society, e.g. in the use of AI in journalism. She discusses the European governance approach to AI, which also focuses heavily on risk assessment and mitigation, critically discusses the limitations of this risk-based approach and shows how insights from law and communication science can be integrated into AI governance. She also raises the question of whether the use of AI in the media sector should be categorised as particularly risky.
