This town in India still makes perfumes the way it was done 400 yrs ago. When I say perfume, you think… France. But, did you know about Kannauj, the perfume capital of India? For more than 400 years, people here have been making perfumes the same way. Using the traditional Degh Bhapka method. That means no electricity or modern machinery. They make all kinds of scents, but one of them is very famous. Mitti Attar. Potters bake clay from the riverbed into small disks. The baked clay is soaked in water and slowly heated over a wood fire. As the water turns to steam, the earthy scent travels into a flask filled with sandalwood oil which absorbs and preserves the smell of wet earth. The result? A perfume that smells exactly like first rain. Petrichor. Literally the fragrance of earth after rain, captured forever. But as with any pristine profession - this ancient craft is slowly fading. Because of cheap synthetic perfumes and high taxes. Still, it survives in small workshops, carried forward by families who’ve done it for generations. The next time you reach for a perfume, remember Kannauj. Share this to celebrate the art of perfumes, made in India.
