We ran a benchmarking analysis of a sample of queries on AWS Athena vs. Varada's big data indexing-based platform. The results will amaze you! For the benchmarking analysis, we used the following: Ride sharing application Used by marketing and product teams for segmentation, user behavior, etc. Files in parquet format (S3) + snappy compression 27.6bn rows, 1.5TB (compressed) Cluster: AWS Athena ran on 3 months of data, partitioned daily. Varada cluster ran on the same data lake (AWS S3), no modeling or partitioning. Varada supports different types of indexes in SQL; columns are automatically indexed according to workload needs.
