One of the planet's youngest volcanic islands can be found just off the coastline of mainland Iceland. There, the island of Surtsey has a summit which stands at more than 500 feet above sea level. At more than 1.5 square kilometers in size, this island all formed during a cluster of closely spaced eruptions which occurred across 3.5 years. This is the story of how Surtsey formed, and the little known satellite islands which vanished below the waves.
