This time, the adventure follows an experienced local rider into terrain more commonly claimed by mountain bikes than gravel. The ride began on narrow, technical tracks where sharp rock edges demanded full concentration. Gravel tyres felt vulnerable in places, and with temperatures climbing to 29°C (84°F), the heat added another layer of intensity. Five significant climbs wound upward through hilly terrain, offering welcome shade beneath tree-lined corridors — natural tunnels of cool relief between exposed sections. An unexpected “Road Closed” sign and locked gate forced a change of plan. Trusting local knowledge, the route shifted toward expansive coastal views across the Kapiti coastline and into a quieter forested ascent. The reward — a sweeping descent on broken seal and gravel roads. The final stretch returned to quiet pastoral roads and a warm afternoon sun, closing out a ride that tested both rider and machine, but rewarded with scenery, challenge, and genuine exploration.
