Teams scrambled over tyre choices, with John Watson’s Brabham crew switching to wets while James Hunt bravely stuck to slicks—the only man to do so. As the race finally got underway, Watson shot past pole-sitter Mario Andretti, while chaos unfolded behind. Andretti soon misjudged his braking into the Kleine Chicane, crashing into Watson and eliminating both. Nilsson narrowly avoided the mess and emerged near the front, only to be passed by Jody Scheckter’s Wolf at the end of lap one. In the early laps, Scheckter pulled a small lead while Nilsson and Jochen Mass fought hard in pursuit. Hunt’s slick gamble quickly turned disastrous, as he slipped down the order and was even lapped by the leaders. Retirements mounted as Emerson Fittipaldi, Hans Stuck, Riccardo Patrese, and Carlos Reutemann all fell by the wayside. Lauda finished second, while Ronnie Peterson claimed third ahead of Vittorio Brambilla, Alan Jones, and Hans Stuck. Hunt, whose gamble had failed, ended just outside the points.
