The Lyric Opera of Chicago performs Giuseppe Verdi’s Otello on September 21st, 1985. Plácido Domingo is in the title role, along with Margaret Price as Desdemona and Sherrill Milnes as Iago. Bruno Bartoletti conducts. Full credits here: https://www.lyricopera.org/shows/perf... This was recorded live off the radio by Mr. Marchant’s daughter in 1985. There are a couple of other recordings of this on YouTube, but as usual the quality of this analog tape recording is much better than what is out there. Domingo’s performance here is noteworthy, even amongst his many Otello turns. Just two days before this performance there was a terrible earthquake in Mexico City where he had close family. It must have been top of mind for him but he completed this opening night performance and then left the next day for Mexico to help search for his family who sadly didn’t make it. Even after his family was found he stuck around to help search for others. Quite the story. William Johns took over for Domingo for the rest of the run. Technical Info: Maxell UD35, quarter track stereo 10.5” reel 3 3/4 IPS Interesting perhaps only to me but this is the first time I’m playing a tape back on the actual machine it was recorded on. Mr. Marchant’s daughter noted the recording machine as a Teac X-1000 - what you see in the video. I inherited this deck along with all of the tapes. The vast majority of the tapes in the archive are actually half track/two track and unplayable on the Teac, so I bought the Pioneer deck you see in most of my other videos with material from the 1940s and 50s. 00:00 - Act I 32:43 - Act II 01:10:00 - Act III 1:48:36 - Act IV 2:21:21 - Radio announcer
