The Céilí Allstars Wren's Day Special! Livestreamed show From DeBarras Folk Club // Sat 26th of December // 9pm (Irish Time) The Céilí Allstars are an exciting four piece traditional Irish music band. They formed from a group of friends playing the session trail in Cork city in the late nineties. Their musical style includes shades of Sliabh Luachra - where they originate from - combined with generous sprinklings of folk & country. They've played residencies in Cork's legendary folk venues the Lobby Bar, Cork and De Barra's in Clonakilty. They're also at home on bigger stages playing at festivals in Ireland, Holland, Italy, Russia and Australia. This special St Stephens Day show celebrates the ancient tradition of wren day! "The wren the wren the king of all birds/ St Stephen's Day was caught in the furze/ Her clothes were all torn- her shoes were all worn/ Up with the kettle and down with the pan/ Give us a penny to bury the "wran"/ If you haven't a penny a halfpenny will do/ If you haven't a halfpenny/ God bless you!" Wren Day, (Irish: Lá an Dreoilín), is celebrated on 26 December, St. Stephen's Day in a number of countries across Europe. The tradition has evolved in Ireland to consist of ‘wren boys’ going form house to house or town to town playing music and looking for donations … while in the early days wren boys, also known as r ‘Mummers’ or ‘Strawboys’ would dress in costumes of old clothes and straw with the addition of tinsel and other types of decoration, basically whatever you can grab off the christmas tree or can find lying around your shed as you run out the door, in recent years… This is a free show - but feel free to make a contribution if you are able! All donations made will be put towards Cork Penny Dinners– Saturday December 26th, 9pm (Irish Time) – Recorded Live from DeBarra’s Clonakilty This project has been part-funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht Sport and Media from the Live Performance Support Scheme Tá an tionscadal seo páirt-mhaoinithe ag An Roinn Turasóireachta, Cultúir, Oidhreachta, Ealoíon, Gaeltachta, Spóirt agus Meán ón Scéim Cúnta maidir le Taibhléiriú Beo less
