In this video, I am talking about the last 4 kings of Nepal and their cars. Rather than being proud, this video is for informational purpose. King Tribhuwan: In 1939, a very famous and rare Mercedes Benz was sent from Germany to Nepal. It was a gift from Adolf Hitler to King Tribhuvan (the grandfather of Nepal’s last king). Because there were no roads in Nepal back then, a team of men actually had to carry the car on their shoulders over the mountains to get it to Kathmandu! After the King passed away, the car was mostly forgotten. It sat in an old garage for years, rusting and falling apart. It became so damaged that parts were falling off, and the seats were ruined. Family Car: The Red Ford "Ba A 2" Among the many shiny luxury cars at the Narayanhiti Museum, the red Ford Model A holds a very special place in history. While the big Mercedes was used for grand parades, this Ford was the private family car for King Tribhuvan and his children. It has a longer, "bus-like" body, which was perfect for carrying the royal family together on trips around the Kathmandu Valley. The most amazing part of its story is how it got to Nepal. Back in the 1930s, there were no roads leading into Kathmandu! This heavy metal car had to be taken apart and carried on the shoulders of over 60 porters. Today, the car has a fresh coat of red paint and its original number plate, Ba A 2—one of the very first numbers ever given to a car in Nepal. It stands as a beautiful reminder of a time when "people carried cars" before cars could carry people. Hunting Car: Ford Pickup Truck While many royal cars were made for city parades, this Ford Pickup Truck was built for the wild. It was the personal favorite of King Tribhuvan for his famous hunting expeditions in the deep jungles of Nepal. Manufactured by the Ford Company in Canada, this truck is unique because of its large wooden cargo bed in the back—a sturdy space designed to carry hunting gear, camp supplies, and even the trophies of a successful day in the forest. Because it was used primarily in private royal hunting grounds, it never carried a public number plate, adding a sense of mystery to its history. King Mahendra: Mahendra’s Favourite: The 1963 Austin Princess The most famous car in King Mahendra’s collection is the 1963 Austin Princess. This car was made by a well-known British company called Austin, in partnership with a luxury designer named Vanden Plas. Think of Austin as the builder of the car’s strong engine and frame, while Vanden Plas was like a high-end interior designer who added the "royal touch." Inside, the car was filled with soft leather seats and beautiful handmade woodwork. It was so elegant and high-quality that it was the top choice for the British Royal Family and famous stars like The Beatles. Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III, the Royal Gift The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III is more than just a car; it is a symbol of friendship between two nations. This specific car was a gift from Queen Elizabeth II of England to King Mahendra during her historic first visit to Nepal in 1961. Because there were almost no major roads in Nepal at that time, bringing such a heavy and expensive car into the Kathmandu Valley was a massive task. It represents the beginning of a new era for Nepal, as King Mahendra was working hard to build the country’s first highways. After King Mahendra passed away, the car was carefully handed over to the Military Museum in Chhauni, Kathmandu. While many of the other royal cars are at the Narayanhiti Palace, this silver beauty is kept at Chhauni to show the military and royal history of that time. King Birendra: The Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman While many royal cars are famous for their history, the Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman is famous for being the most advanced car ever built in its time. Made between 1963 and 1981, this "Grand Mercedes" was so expensive and complex that only 2,677 were ever made for the world’s most powerful people—including Kings, Popes, and Presidents. King Birendra used this long, majestic limousine for the most important state events in Nepal. It was a "rolling palace" that showed the world that Nepal Kings were inclined to a modern and sophisticated option. King Gyanendra: The Final Drive: Modern Fleet of High-end Mercedes King Gyanendra’s era was defined by a shift toward high-tech safety and modern luxury. Unlike the kings before him, he relied on a fleet of six high-end Mercedes-Benz S-Class cars, specifically chosen for their bulletproof protection. These were not just cars; they were "mobile fortresses" designed to keep the royal family safe during a very busy time in Nepal’s history. The most famous moment involving these cars happened on June 11, 2008, the day the monarchy ended. In a move that surprised everyone, King Gyanendra chose not to be driven by a royal chauffeur. Instead, he got into the driver’s seat of his own car and personally drove himself out of the Narayanhiti Palace gates for the last time.
