My journey to summit the highest point of all 50 states of the United States (Plus Washington DC & Puerto Rico) continues with Arizona. Humphrey's Peak located near Flagstaff, AZ is the highest point of the state of Arizona at 12,633 ft tall. The hike starts at Snowbowl Ski Resort, it's a total of 10 miles out and back (5 miles to the summit, 5 miles back to the parking lot) and 3,382 ft of elevation gain. This is a high altitude hike, it is intense so bring plenty of water and pace yourself. Humphrey's Peak is part of San Francisco Mountain which is an extinct stratovolcano, in fact geologists estimate it once stood around 16,000 ft tall before erupting 400,000 years ago. This is my first high altitude mountain hike and first extreme high point outside the Midwest USA. I am guided by my brother Connor who has climbed 25 Colorado "14ers" (mountains above 14,000 ft), he is my Colorado Sherpa. Along the way we decided to find the remains of a B-24 plane crash site that occurred along the side of Humphrey's peak back in 1944. A tragedy that claimed the lives of 8 servicemen during a military flight. The debris field is still scattered along the side of the mountain. For those interested in finding the plane crash site, you must turn off the main trail at the 7th Switchback (just past the 3 mile marker). There is a large elongated rock located at this 7th switchback that can be used as a marker. Here, you veer off the main trail between two small aspen trees and across a talus rock field - follow the cairns for about .5 mile (they are well marked and easy to find) and this will take you to the B-24 bomber crash site. I don't recommend continuing to the summit off trail unless you are a skilled high elevation climber/hiker, if not turn back toward the main trail.
