On 12 October 1984, a bomb was detonated in the Grand Brighton Hotel by the Provisional IRA. It was one of the most significant operations carried out by the Provisional IRA during the Troubles, and represented the culmination of years of planning by the militant organisation in its effort to assassinate Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. While Thatcher narrowly escaped injury, the explosion and resultant roof collapse killed five people and injured more than 30 others, the highest profile victim being Secretary for Trade and Industry, Norman Tebbit. While Tebbit would recover and return to office, his wife Margaret would remain in hospital for two years, rendered paralysed by the blast. Norman Tebbit, would serve in the Thatcher administration as one of her most loyal supporters, covering a variety of senior posts across her 11-year tenure. Tebbit gained notoriety for taking on the unions during an intense period in British industrial history. He represented the constituencies of Epping and Chingford as an MP for 22 years before receiving a life peerage, making him Lord Tebbit of Chingford.
