JACK THE RIPPER, Lang (dark ride, ghost train, walkthrough) Built: 1996/97 Vienna. Since 1997 the Wurstelprater has been home to a haunted attraction that does without the traditional ride cars. Jack the Ripper is a walk-through ghost house where visitors pass through gloomy London alleyways and finish in a so-called witches’ swing that distorts balance and direction. The attraction was built on a site with long-standing showman tradition. Previously the Kobelkoff family and later the Viennese entrepreneur Eduard Lang operated amusements there, including ball-throwing games and a chair swing. While official records do not mention a single general contractor, parts of the installation can be traced back to well-known suppliers in the European amusement industry. The final “Haunted Swing” section was produced by the company Dostal, and numerous figures inside were delivered by Hofmann Figuren, a specialist for animatronic showpieces. The overall attraction, however, was put together locally under Prater management after a construction fire in 1996, with the official opening taking place the following year. Since its debut Jack the Ripper has become a fixture of the Vienna Prater. Admission is allowed from the age of ten, tickets cost six euros, and the experience promises jump scares, loud screams and a dramatic storyline that has been updated several times over the years.
