YIDDISH SONG: Abraham Rosenstein / Achulem / Emerson 1333 / 1919

Achulem / אחולם / A Dream Abraham Rosenstein (1878-1949) was a tenor singer born in Iași, Romania, who recorded over 50 songs in Yiddish and Romanian for Victor, Columbia, and Emerson between 1916 and 1924. His father was an usher in the Romanian theater and his brothers and sisters were active in the Yiddish theater. Like Abraham, brothers Samuel and Leizer were singers and actors who had varying degrees of success in America. Their sister Rokhl was a wardrobe master, and sister Rosa was a singer and actor, who performed with her husband, Maurice Ziegler, and their three daughters in their Vienna-based theatrical company. Abraham and Leizer were termed “folk singers,” and Leizer was involved in collecting folksongs. Rosa and a brother performed in coffee shops to help support the family when their mother fell ill. The brothers appeared to have traveled to America and back, with Abraham most likely being the “A. Rosenstein (New York)” who recorded 10 songs for Gramophone in Lemberg in 1908, and the “Abreham Rosenstein” who recorded a number of titles with violinist Oscar Zehngut for Favorite Record around that time. (Leizer is likely the “L. Rosenstein” who also recorded for Favorite.) Back in America, Abraham and Samuel were recording for Victor in 1916, and Leizer may well have been the “Leon Rosenstein” who recorded four songs in Yiddish and one in Romanian in 1917. (The one Romanian song was released with a song by fellow Romanian émigré, Simon Paskal, on the reverse side.) Samuel’s recordings were all from Yiddish stage productions and he made no recordings after 1916, but carried on in acting and some stage production and management in the 1920s. Leizer was active in the Yiddish theater as an actor and director, particularly in the Midwest, and appeared as “noted Jewish actor and comedian,” giving programs of “singing and interpretations of Jewish folklore.” Abraham continued recording until 1924, including four songs in Romanian, and a number of songs by the Yiddish songwriters of the time: Abe Schwartz, Rubin Doctor, Joseph Rumshinsky, Louis Friedsell and Joseph Cherniavsky. Abraham’s newspaper notices as “a singer who has broadcast through station WJZ and made several Victor records” were more common than those advertising his acting, although he did perform in a “musical comedy drama” about the Spanish Inquisition in 1933! He was also billed as “A. Rosenstein, of New York, famed singer of Yiddish folk songs” for a 1939 show in Atlanta. NOTES: 1.
