The Ukrainian government says it's backing a call from the Pope for a pause in fighting during the Winter Olympics. A charity in Sudan says at least 24 people, including eight children, have been killed in an attack on a vehicle carrying displaced civilians in the central state of North Kordofan. The Sudanese doctors network said the people were fleeing from conflict in a neighbouring state. It's the final day of campaigning ahead of Japan's SNAP general election. Sena Eitakaichi, who was only elected Prime Minister in October, called the poll in an attempt to increase her Liberal Democratic Party's fragile coalition majority in parliament. Russian media say the authorities will soon interrogate suspects in the attempted assassination of the Deputy Head of Military Intelligence, General Vladimir Alexeev. He was attacked on Friday by a gunman who then escaped. The Islamic State group says it's behind Friday's suicide bombing that killed more than 30 people at a Shia mosque in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad. The group's news agency published the name and picture of the alleged attacker. There's been fresh chaos inside Somalia's lower house of parliament as MPs again fail to debate constitutional amendments being pushed by the president. Videos on social media showed several police officers in the chamber arguing with the lawmakers. Brazil is to suspend the dredging operations on a major Amazon tributary. Indigenous communities who see the rivers as vital to their way of life had protested against the project. It's the first full day of the Winter Olympics in Italy. Five gold medals are up for grabs including immense downhill skiing and women's ski jumping. The games are being held across two main locations, Milan and the town of Cortina Dampenso.
