The last few weeks in Sudan have been unimaginably violent. On April 15, rival armed groups in Sudan, led by their ambitious generals, unleashed their war on Sudan’s capital of Khartoum. Nearly 500 people have died, and millions have been forced to flee. The fighting is between the Sudanese army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces - led by Mohamad Hamdan Dagalo, popularly known as Hemedti. These two generals have a long history together. Both had been allies during ex-President Omar al-Bashir's regime and worked together during military operations in Darfur: Burhan as a regular military officer and Hemedti as a militia leader. However, Bashir was toppled in a civilian-led coup in 2019. The ICC has also indicted him for committing genocide in Darfur. Even though they constantly crossed paths over the years, Burhan and Hemedti always had their differences. Once they rose to power after staging a military coup in 2021 to topple Sudan’s brief attempt at a civilian government, those cracks grew wider. Eventually, their disagreements exploded into armed conflict last month. Who are these two warlords? Why are they fighting? And will they ever make peace? In this episode of The New Arab Voice, we spoke with Jihad Mashamoun, an expert and analyst on Sudan, and David Shinn, a former US ambassador to Ethiopia and Burkina Faso, to better understand the rift between Burhan and Hemedti. We tried to represent voices from within Sudan, but widespread internet cuts - especially in Khartoum - made it impossible to get in touch with those on the ground.
