DANA - It's Gonna Be a Cold Cold Christmas (50th Anniversary Version) [Music Video]

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of her 1975 hit single, It’s Gonna Be A Cold Cold Christmas, Ireland’s first Eurovision winner, DANA, returned to the studio to re-record a brand new version, produced by her son Rob. This much loved festive staple was among a string of hits that followed her 1970 Eurovision victory with All Kinds of Everything. Originally released in 1975, It’s Gonna Be a Cold Cold Christmas was written by hitmakers Roger Greenaway and Grammy winner Geoff Stephens. Just six weeks before Christmas that year, Greenaway flew to Berlin with the song in hand to meet DANA, who was then recording at Berlin’s renowned Hansa Studios. After one listen, DANA knew it was special and recorded her vocals on the spot. Released only four weeks before Christmas, the single soared to #3 in Ireland and #4 in the UK, reportedly selling up to 50,000 copies a day at its peak. Its climb to the coveted Christmas #1 was halted by Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, which dominated the charts that year, and Greg Lake’s I Believe in Father Christmas taking the #2 spot. The new 50th anniversary version stays true to the spirit of the original, while reimagining it as a nostalgic chamber-pop arrangement. The arrangement’s sense of longing, which is juxtaposed with the joyful sentiments and sounds of Christmas, captures the bittersweet emotions that many feel during the festive season. The recording features a host of Galway-based musicians, along with members of DANA's family and longtime musical collaborators. Heading up the project is producer and drummer/percussionist Rob Scallon. Rob had previously co-written and produced DANA’s 2024 single Christmas Again, along with co-writing the album track Breaking Free from DANA’s 2019 album My Time.
