Here's a great bit of old piano blues from the amazing Will Ezell! This tune features a walking bass and a really cool descending right hand melody. It seems simple but it's deceptively difficult, and I've been trying for many years to work up a good version of this one. The recording adds to the difficulty because it's sort of half swung/half straight. To play this piece, you kind of just have to make up your mind what feel you want to give it. I've been really into Ezell recently, and loving all his heavily ragtime influenced barrelhouse playing. I recommend checking him out. This tune shares a lot in common with Les Copeland's "Texas Blues", which had been published about ten years earlier. It is unclear if Ezell learned from Copeland, Copeland learned from Ezell, or, most likely, the theme had been floating around the Texas/Louisiana border.
