The current state of my R2-D2 build, showing off the collision avoidance features using ultrasound and infrared distance sensors. Sorry for the poor sound. The robot has five Maxbotix EZ1/EZ3 ultrasound sensors in the skirt to detect obstacles in the droid's path and six Sharp GP2D120 infrared sensors in the feet to avoid falling down stairs. Currently he is remote-controlled using a wireless Wii Nunchuk, later (once the head is on :-)) he will get an embedded PC that does mapping, planning and other autonomous functions. The goal is full autonomy and reaction to humans. The droid is moving very slowly in this video because I've locked down the maximum speed to about half of what he can do, as a safety measure while testing. It's still a slow droid compared to some others out there, but at full speed he does about 5km/h or 4mph, which is fast enough for an autonomous robot.
