I will apologize ahead of time for a couple things. First of all, the picture quality will be not great, because I'm trying to video while I'm walking, and the sound will not be great because I'm actually wearing a mask. I'm walking down Hesperian Boulevard in San Leandro, the beginning of my normal 3.2 mile run - when I'm running. I confess that I'm a fair-weather runner - I pretty much take the winter off and revert to indoor exercise, not so much because I can't take the cold by putting on more clothing, but I find it difficult on my lungs to breathe excessively cold air. But, anyway, I'm normally in pretty decent shape, even though I confess that over the years I've digressed from being a runner into a jogger, and I was about to resume activity for this year in February, when I found that I was experiencing some shortness of breath and light-headedness. So, it turned out that I had a digestive tract issue that had given me a very mild but significant case of anemia, which required staying in the hospital a couple of days, so it kind of forestalled my activity back in February. Later that month, more than two thousand miles away in a town in Georgia, Ahmaud Arbery went out for a similar kind of run, just to get his exercise in, and he was followed and gunned down in cold-blooded murder on the streets of his city. It occurred to me that - another experience of somebody being guilty of, in this case, "running while black." And, for all of my friends who have ever experienced things like this - in fact, even friends of my son, who is in his thirties, who have experienced this - I say that these kinds of things we can no longer accept without saying something, doing something, even if it's something as relatively minor as being guilty of "shopping while Asian." So, today is, would have been, Ahmaud Arbery's birthday, and although I'm not running, since I'm still not quite up to it, I'm walking, and today #IRUNWITHMAUD.
