Don't expect a big yield of currant unless you cut the bushes properly right now. So, which branches are we leaving? We're leaving first-order branches. These are annual shoots without lateral branches, and their bark is gray. We're also leaving second-order branches. These are the branches that produce a good yield. Their bark is brown, and you can see the transition: annual growth rings. As you might have guessed, we're leaving third-order branches. They are dark brown and have lots of lateral branches. Such branches produce the largest yield. But we must definitely cut out fourth-order branches. They are black and also often covered with lichens. They are not needed. We're removing weak and thin branches and branches with swollen buds. This is where big bud mite overwinters. Dispose of such branches. For a good yield, a bush shouldn't have more than 15 branches of various orders. May you prosper!
