Cyclone Narelle spins towards the Queensland coast - Tropical Weather Bulletin

Cyclone Watches are posted for parts of northern Queensland this morning as Cyclone Narelle begins to threaten the region. The storm is currently located to the southeast of Papua New Guinea and is intensifying as it pushes further into the Coral Sea. The storm is expected to continue to strengthen in the next couple of days leading up to its final approach to landfall in Australia, where winds could exceed 200kph. The storm is currently blowing up large amounts of cloud tops, particularly on its northern side, and an eye may be about to appear. Rainfall expectations are high for the landfall zone, with over 400mm possible, however the landfall area is expected to be a fairly sparsely populated one. In the longer range, Narelle is expected to cross through the Gulf of Carpentaria and then the Northern Territory, before emerging back out over the Indian Ocean and a second strengthening phase cannot be ruled out there. Elsewhere, an unusual Mediterranean subtropical storm is on the prowl, and is likely to make landfall with storm force winds south of Bengazi, Libya, tomorrow. Storm force winds could penetrate further inland, however populations in the risk areas are low. Rainfall is likely to reach 50mm in the region.
