What is a Munsell Soil Color Book, and How Do You Use It?

Using a Munsell Soil Color Book is easy! First, find the colored square that most closely matches the color of your soil or artifact (you can page throughout the book and just pick whatever is closest!). Second, record the page number that the colored square is on (for example "10YR" - Munsell Books have weird page numbers like that, that refer to the general color hue on the page (reds, yellows, etc). Third, record the column number and row number of the color square you chose (for example 4/2). Finally, look on the page opposite the color chart for the "official name" of the color (for example, "dark grayish brown"). So in this instance the color name is 10YR4/2, Dark Grayish Brown.
