Most producers build width first through wide pads, stereo wideners, ping-pong delays, haas tricks, etc. And everything sounds huge, until you hit mono and suddenly it all collapses. Here’s why: If your mix only feels big because of stereo spread, it isn’t actually big. It’s phase-dependent. When elements rely on left/right separation instead of harmonic weight and midrange strength, they disappear the moment channels sum together. REAL size starts in the center. Here’s what I do: • Build the mix in mono first • Get the kick, bass, vocal, and main harmonic content strong in the mid channel • Only add width after the core works collapsed • Regularly toggle mono to check phase relationships If it feels powerful in mono, it will feel massive in stereo.
