Song and video depicting the story of Moby Dick by Herman Melville. Moby-Dick; or, The Whale (1851) by Herman Melville is a novel that blends adventure, philosophy, and symbolism into the story of a doomed whaling voyage. The novel is narrated by Ishmael, a restless sailor who joins the whaling ship Pequod to escape life on land. The ship is commanded by the mysterious and obsessive Captain Ahab, who has lost his leg to a massive white whale known as Moby Dick. Ahab is consumed by a desire for revenge against the whale, whom he regards as a manifestation of evil and an inscrutable force of nature. As the Pequod sails across the world’s oceans, Ishmael describes the daily life of the crew, the customs of the whaling industry, and his growing friendship with Queequeg, a skilled harpooner from the South Pacific. Ahab gradually reveals his true purpose to the crew, compelling them to swear an oath to hunt Moby Dick above all other goals. Although some crew members, particularly the first mate Starbuck, sense the madness and danger of Ahab’s obsession, they remain bound by loyalty and circumstance. The ship encounters other whalers, each offering warnings or tales that foreshadow the Pequod’s fate. In the climactic final chase, the Pequod finally encounters Moby Dick. Over three days of pursuit, the whale proves overwhelmingly powerful. Moby Dick destroys the ship, killing Ahab and nearly the entire crew. Ishmael alone survives, clinging to a floating coffin made for Queequeg, and is eventually rescued. The novel ends with Ishmael’s survival as a quiet counterpoint to Ahab’s destructive obsession, emphasizing themes of humility, endurance, and the limits of human control over nature.
