In this video, I travelled deep into the heart of Afghanistan to explore Gulgula City, the ancient hilltop ruins near Bamiyan that were once a thriving stronghold — until it was completely destroyed by Genghis Khan nearly 800 years ago. Known as the “City of Screams,” Gulgula was the last refuge of the Bamiyan Kingdom during the Mongol invasion in the 13th century. When the local ruler resisted surrender, Genghis Khan’s army wiped out the entire city, leaving behind nothing but haunting ruins scattered across the dusty hills. Today, these ruins stand silently, overlooking the beautiful Bamiyan Valley, as a reminder of one of history’s most brutal moments. While exploring this ancient site, I faced an unexpected situation — I was stopped by local fighters who questioned why I was filming. It was a tense moment, but also a glimpse into how life still feels controlled and uncertain here. You’ll see the reality of travel in Afghanistan — not just the beauty and history, but also the raw unpredictability of being on the ground. This video shows both sides of Bamiyan: the ancient past buried under ruins and the modern struggles that still shape this land. I also visited areas around the famous Buddhas of Bamiyan, spoke to locals about how life has changed since the wars, and tried to understand how a place once destroyed by Genghis Khan still carries stories of resilience and survival.
