Present Simple Tense Definition Present Simple Tense is used to talk about: ✔ Daily routines / Habits ✔ Universal truths / Facts ✔ Timetables & schedules ✔ Permanent situations Structure of Present Simple Positive Sentences Subject + Verb (1st form) + s / es + Object Examples: I play cricket. You read books. They work hard. He plays cricket. It works properly. Nandini teaches English. Use of s / es We add s / es to the verb when the subject is singular (He / She / It / Singular noun) Add s: play - plays read - reads Add es: If verb ends in s, ss, sh, ch, x, o go - goes wash - washes watch - watches Change y to ies: If verb ends in consonant + y study - studies try - tries Negative Sentences Structure Subject + Do / Does + Not + V1 + Object Do - I / You / We / They (Plural) Does - He / She / It / Name (singular) Examples: I do not like tea. They do not watch TV. He does not play football. She does not eat junk food. Remember: Verb is always in base form in negative. (No s / es) He does not plays. (wrong) He does not play. (Right) Interrogative Sentences (Questions) Structure: Do/Does + Subject + V1 + Object? Examples: Do you play cricket? Do they live here? Does he work in a bank? Does she teach English? Remember: Verb is always in base form in interrogative. (No s / es) Does he plays? (Wrong) Does he play? (Right) Wh - Interrogative Sentences (Questions) Wh-word + do / does + subject + V1 + Object? Habit He drinks coffee every morning. I play cricket with my right hand. Universal Truth The sun rises in the east. Water boils at 100°C. Whenever I throw something upward, it comes downward. Facts Delhi is the capital of India. Dogs bark. Timetable / Schedule The train leaves at 6 PM. The class starts at 9 AM. Permanent Situation Harish lives in Delhi Vaishali works in a bank.
